Handrails for Scaffolding in South Africa – Ensuring a Safe Platform for Workers
Handrails for scaffolding in South Africa are essential for the safety of your team on any elevated platform. They stop workers from accidentally stepping off the edge and keep tools and materials from falling on people below.
When are Handrails Required?
Under South Africa’s OHS Act, scaffolding safety is governed by the Construction Regulations and the national standard SANS 10085. Handrails are mandatory wherever there is a risk of a fall from the platform edge, which is the normal position for most scaffolds. As a rule, the higher the working platform, the more important full edge protection becomes, and many sites treat any platform above 2m as hazardous. On higher or exposed scaffolds, you may need extra safeguards such as tied scaffolds, controlled access, and fall-prevention planning.
Where there are ladder access points, make sure those openings are also protected against falls, not just the main platform edge.
What Compliant Handrails Include
A compliant edge protection set-up includes a top rail and mid rail that form a continuous barrier, fitted on open sides and ends where people or materials could fall. Toe boards should be placed upright along the full length of the platform, or the landings of access towers, to stop tools and materials sliding off. Where the gap to an adjacent structure could let equipment or workers fall through, internal toe boards may also be needed.
Cross-bracing is not a substitute for a guardrail. The barrier needs to be securely fixed and able to stand up to normal site use without shifting or leaving gaps.
Handrails on Disc-O-Scaff’s Kwikstage System
Disc-O-Scaff manufactures handrails as a Kwikstage component, designed for staircases to give workers a safe railing when moving between platform levels. Because Kwikstage is a modular, wedge-connected system, handrails lock into the same structure as the toe boards, hook-on ladders and staircases, rather than being bolted on as an afterthought.
Ensure Compliance From Your Supplier
Before hiring or buying, confirm that your supplier provides handrails and toe boards as standard, stable base equipment such as base plates or jacks, and clear guidance on assembly, use and inspection suited to the height and load of your project. Anyone using scaffolding should inspect the scaffold before first use, after any alteration or impact that could affect stability, and at regular intervals while it remains in service.
Do not treat handrails for scaffolding in South Africa as an optional extra. Too many contractors install the bare minimum to save time; don’t fall into that trap. Disc-O-Scaff supplies scaffold handrails as standard on all hire setups; contact us for a fully compliant scaffolding solution.
